LAKE FOREST – Back by popular demand: Gorton’s five-day crash course in coding and computing taught by Stanford University Masters student in Computer Science Konstantine Buhler. This year, Buhler will teach classes for both beginning and intermediate students.

Coding is an essential skill in the digital age, and software architecture is one of the fastest growing careers. From Minecraft to iPhone apps, today’s youth is inspired to build and create in the technological realm.

“I really wish I’d been exposed to these basics of coding before I went to college,” said Buhler, who spent much of the past year building a new app for anonymous polling in trusted groups. “Even knowing just a little bit of everything would have helped me hit the ground running. I had to work hard to catch up with tech.”

Both courses will span five days August 10-14 with the beginning class from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. and the intermediate class from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Beginning students will learn the hardware from the inside out by deconstructing one of Buhler’s computers to learn the specific job of each part. By the end of the week students will know how to build both basic and dynamic webpages.

Intermediate students will learn the basics of Python, a scripting computer language. Students will start with simple commands and progress to compiled and scripted languages. By week’s end, the goal is to discuss the basics of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

“I designed these courses for aspiring scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and professionals ages 12 to 18,” said Buhler, a Lake Forest High School graduate. “I’ve limited class sizes to 15, and each student will bring their own laptop so they get individual attention on hardware familiar to them.” Class fees for the week are $400 per class and registration is directly through Konstantine Buhler at buhler@stanford.edu. Class details are available at gortoncenter.org.

Gorton Community Center is a privately-funded, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, which operates in partnership with volunteers and the City of Lake Forest to enrich the lives of its residents through cultural arts, education and charitable service. Gorton relies on the generosity of residents and businesses to help fund programs, services and building improvements offered in the historic building owned by the city. Gorton Community Center: The gathering place in the heart of our community where people connect, converse, learn, listen, play and perform.
